Summary

his article presents results of the investigation conducted at the end of the first term of the school year 1999/2000 in 33 public primary schools and 16 lower secondary schools in Kielce. The aim of this investigation was to determine the organizational and legal status of school libraries and their preparation for the accomplishment of the tasks resulting from the reform of the education system. There is no doubt that the principles of the reform cannot be effectively accomplished without a proper base, i.e. effectively operating libraries, well equipped, and with a highly qualified staff.
