Summary

The subject matter of books published in the years 1948-1952 oscillated between socio-political and literary problems. Two publications caused a great controversy among the Polish emigre circles and brought about critical articles about the Literary Institute in the Polish emigre press. The first publication concerned fragments of the report by Aleksander Janta from his three-month stay in Poland, the second, written by Melchior Wańkowicz, was addressed to all Polish emigrants who were apprehensive of their own fate and could not cope with it. All this controversy had a favourable effect on the autonomy of the Literary Institute, which became independent from the London émigré community. From that moment the Literary Institute became the cradle of independent political and cultural ideas which have served Poland until today.
The year 1953 was another milestone in the activity of the Literary Institute, when the „Kultura" Library was established and the published activity of the Institute was regulated.
