Summary

The article is a biographic outline of the colourful and meritous journalist Jan Czarnocki, the editor of the socialist "Robotnik" [Worker] (1918), the daily newspaper of the Polish Section of the Socialist Party of the U.S.A. - "Dziennik Ludowy" [The People's Daily] (1921), which was published in Chicago, and after return to Poland - in Warsaw: "Kurier Czerwony" [The Red Courier], "Expres Poranny" [The Morning Express], "Kurier Poranny" [The Morning Courier], "Gazeta Wieczorna [The Evening Daily], "Gazeta Wieczorna" [The General Daily]. During World War II of he acted in conspiracy; under the pseudonym Dołęgowski, he worked in the intelligence service of Związek Walki Zbrojnej [Union of Armed Combat] in France; afterwards in the underground resistance. Arrested by Gestapo in 1942, he was tortured. In 1943 he escaped from the concentration camp in Embrum, and got to London through Spain and Portugal. In exile, after the withdrawal of the acknowledgement of the Polish government in exile in London, he was the editor-in-chief of Dziennik Polski i Dziennik Żołnierza [The Polish Daily and Soldier's Daily] (1945-1947), improving its editoral level and typographical level. He was an excellent organiser and a reliable journalist who knew his profession.
