Summary

The aim of the press and television in the 1970s was to aid the educational process and gain public support for politics of the Polish United Workers Party. Such a position of the media determined its propagandist role. It also applied to the children and youth press, which was incorporated in the uniform educational system. It is reflected in numerous documents from that period which specified the party objectives and the media tasks in spreading "socialist educational ideals" and creating "proper" attitudes. Patriotic education played a very important role in those undertakings.
The presented patterns of patriotic attitudes, which appear in periodicals for children and youth in the 1970s, do not cover the whole subject but are only a significant part of the complex picture of the national tradition which instilled in readers' minds. Patriotism was treated in the discussed period as building "socialist" homeland by means of work, hence predominance of such topics in the columns of the papers. Alongside were references to various independence struggles. However, they were dominated by matters concerning the Second World War.
