Summary

In 1884 the Krakow Province of Jesus Society began to publish a monthly magazine entitled "Przegląd Powszechny" [The General Review]. The magazine has been published with intervals in the years 1914-1915,1939-1947 and 1953-1982 until today. The Publishers of the periodical address it to the intelligentsia and try to work out an agreement between faith and mind, Catholicism and new opinions in the sciences and arts. Although the burden of publishing of the monthly has always rested on the members of the Jesus Society, it has also been edited by lay intellectuals representing the academe as well as editors of other periodicals, lawyers and well-known writers, artists, doctors and teachers. In the columns of the periodical the reader could always find articles concerning present events but also scholarly publications from such spheres as theology, philosophy, history, art history, pedagogics and education. Literary criticism has always been present in the magazine. Besides, the magazine contains regular reviews, reports on religious, scientific and social issues. Today the periodical is characterised by Christian inspiration of publications, interdisciplinary texts and also by a balanced attitude to cultural phenomena. The periodical is one of the best publications of the Catholic Church in Poland and it can be included in the major periodicals which jointly create the history of the Polish press. Its achievement is so considerable that it has been the object of research analyses. The present article is an attempt to characterise publications which deal with the subject of "Przegląd Powszechny".
