The article deals with the output of Jerzy Stempowski (1893-1969), one of the most outstanding Polish essay writers. This study outlines the features of the output and also presents the extraordinary personality of this refined essayist, who - on account of his erudition, knowledge of classics and versatile interests - is often compared with the sages of the Enlightenment. Stempowski achieved excellence in essay writing but he also wrote original letters which have regained an intellectual and artistic rank.
